In this alternate world vampires exist among humans, and in some American states, like Wisconsin, they can be legally eradicated. Cammie is an eradicator for the Westrina Center. On an assignment she breaks into a vampire's apartment and drives a stake through his heart. To her surprise and horror, there is a young child living there who is devastated at her daddy's murder. This incident awakens in Cammie frightening childhood memories that she had repressed. Her father, too, had been a vampire, a cruel man who killed her human mother. She also had a little brother, Ben, whom she had tried to protect. She decides to leaves the Center and go in search of Ben. Meanwhile, in alternating chapters, the reader meets Ben, whose hereditary vampiric nature has only recently become apparent. He revels in these powers. This is an intense and sometimes unnerving story. |
